TUNIS, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Tunisian freight ship "Hannibal II" was hijacked on Thursday by unidentified gunmen off the Gulf of Aden, Tunisia's official press agency TAP reported.

The ship with 31 crews aboard including 23 Tunisians was sailing from Malaysia to Greece, TAP said.

The ship, which is operated by the Tunisian "GMT" company and bears a Panamanian flag, was hijacked when laying anchor in the Gulf of Aden where the armed pirates forced the ship to set sail for the Somali coasts.

"This hijacking in an area known for its dense commercial, tourist and military traffic comes as a surprise with regard to the massive presence of warships in the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coasts," TAP said.

It is the first time a Tunisian ship is hijacked off the Somali coast, one of the most dangerous navigation areas of the world. So far, no groups have claimed responsibility for the hijacking.
