Escitalopram oxalate

White or off-white powder, easily soluble in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide, soluble in physiological saline, slightly soluble in water and ethanol, slightly soluble in ethyl acetate, insoluble in heptane. Dexcitalopram, the active isomer of citalopram (S-citalopram), has a highly selective inhibitory effect on the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) and the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. Absorption effects are minimal. It increases the concentration of 5-HT in the synaptic cleft by preventing 5-HT reuptake, resulting in an antidepressant effect. Mainly used for the treatment of major depression.
